Hello everyone out there!

I just saw this film a few days ago and since then I've been looking like crazy for a place to talk about it! I saw this posted on Lastfm and had to join...IMMEDIATELY!

Anyways this film is really amazing. It captures something only people living during this time can understand. It captures the isolation, loneliness, disconnectedness that permeates this world, but also the warm green moments when life is doused with a little bit of ether. It has easily become the theme movie of my life! I know i'm obsessed, but when its right its right! Wink

Hi pyro,

I'm glad you found us here :] As you can see there isn't much discussion.. yet! Unfortunately lilyholic, the old site, went down, so we're starting over.

There really is something special about lily, and the way that it affects the people that watch it, as well as their connection to the world. I often find myself wanting to look up the stars or to lay down in the grass when I am listening to the music.. It's truly a beautiful thing; or maybe that's now how to describe it. The only word that fits it is ethereal.

I hope you enjoy your stay!

I don't think that only those born during that time could understand the feeling. I think people from different eras of time can relate to the movie. The old and the young are a lot more similar than you'd think.
But yes, the movie did do a good job capturing the emotions of the children.

It did do a very good job capturing the emotions of children.  The thing is, in our youth, a lot of us go through these sorts of things.  Sometimes, when we grow up, we forget to look back to it.  But seeing things like this bring back the memories and the feelings of those times.  Even for adults I think the film must be stunning, because it portrays a much darker side of society in japan, and in general, that even our elders can relate to.

I often listen to stories by my grandfather.  He often talks about his youth and school time, with a light hearted tone and laugh.  But, the thing is, a lot of what he describes is rather melancholy, rough in nature.  It shows that even though times and events change, the way in which people bully and live, perhaps, that the nature of things stay the same, that middle and high school are still rough and full of bullying and loneliness and pain, followed by solace in the things we dub 'the ether.'

I think what I loved about the film so much was what it said about modern society. I don't think the film was meant to be about Japanese culture especially, nor do I think it's aims were to highlight flaws of Japanese society. I think that the whole story is just about what it is to be human in the 21st century. There are so many themes in the film that I think people can relate to: isolation, melancholy, hopelessness and I think that's why it affects so many people so profoundly. It seems insane that in the age of communication, there should be so many people who feel completely alone and removed from life. That's why anyone who has ever felt disconnected from the world should see All About Lily Chou-Chou.

I don't think the movie was about something specific. It's about pain, that's the further I would go in labeling. It's a story about something real, happening in many different ways all arround the world. It's not that much about the situation of the kids, it's about the emotions those situations provoke.

I think a lot of us feel that this film was made for us or about us. Isn't that interesting?

It's like the ether calling us.
